Eat, Pray, Love

Eat, Pray, LoveEat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I read some very nasty comments about this book and I think I should defend it a little here. I had a prejudice with this book when it was launched, but reconsider it after reading some critics during the launch of the movies. I saw the movie and related to her quest so I decided to read the book.

Well, first of all, we should consider it talks about a life experience of a real person. Someone that was successful and rich but unhappy. After her divorce and a bad relationship she'd realized that she had lost herself (or that she was never sure about who she were). She decided to go on a one year trip, spending four months in Italy, India and Indonesia each on a quest to find pleasure, devotion and balance but above all, to find out what she really is and want. For someone that was always self-conscious and self-confident and have all the self-things in the proper place, this may be silly, but I believe there are a lot of people that are not happy and never ask themselves why, or if they do, they do not have the courage to do something about that. Well, she did, and she put her experience in a book. Maybe is a very private subject to put in a book, but it's good to know someone else experience on the same quest that you are.

This said, I should add that the writing becomes deeper and more interesting by the passage of time. In this way Italy was shallow, I wasn't to much attracted to the story, India becomes more complex and interesting as she faces her issues and Bali is more pleasant as she gets involved with other people issues.

Nor a life changing book nor a nobel prize but still fun to read.
